چکیده

OBJECTIVES The Model of Functional Deficits associated with hallucinations is used as part of the clinical documentation in the San Jose State University Psychosocial Occupational Therapy Clinic. On the basis of this model, hallucinations are classified according to functional deficits and whether the deficits are a result of the content or intrusiveness of the hallucinations. This classification is important because it helps occupational therapists know the full extent of the dysfunction through understanding the underlying pathology. The purpose of this classification is to assist in the development of clinical treatment plans that incorporate techniques for coping with hallucinations. METHOD The sample included 39 clients seen in the clinic over a 4-year period. Student occupational therapists were responsible for documenting the classifications using the Model of Functional Deficits associated with hallucinations. The clients' charts were then reviewed retrospectively to classify the hallucinations according to the clients' functional deficits. The classification system ranged from Class 0, insufficient information, to Class VI, persistent hallucinations with profound functional deficits. With these classifications, interventions were planned with the clients in order for them to practice coping mechanisms (e.g., self-instruction, decreased stimulation, increased stimulation) to maintain function during their hallucinations. RESULTS The findings indicated that 54% of the clients continued to experience hallucinations (i.e., Class II-Class V), although all received psychotropic medication, thus necessitating continuing therapeutic intervention. CONCLUSION This model helps identify specific client experiences that can then be used to develop occupational therapy interventions.

Neuroanatomy of "hearing voices": a frontotemporal brain structural abnormality associated with auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia.

Auditory hallucinations are a frequent symptom in schizophrenia. While functional imaging studies have suggested the association of certain patterns of brain activity with sub-syndromes or single symptoms (e.g. positive symptoms such as hallucinations), there has been only limited evidence from structural imaging or post-mortem studies. In this study, we investigated the relation of local brain...

Study of functional-performance deficits in athletes with previous ankle sprains

Abstract Background: Despite the importance of functional-performance deficits in athletes with history of ankle sprain few, studies have been carried out in this area. The aim of this research was to study relationship between previous ankle sprains and functional-performance deficits in athletes. Materials and methods: The subjects were 40 professional athletes selected through random sampl...

Regional cortical grey matter loss in Parkinson's disease without dementia is independent from visual hallucinations.

In our previous functional magnetic resonance imaging study, Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with visual hallucinations (VH) showed reduced activations in ventral/lateral visual association cortices preceding image recognition, compared with both PD patients without VH and healthy controls. The primary aim of the current study was to investigate whether functional deficits are associated with...

Pentylenetetrazol-kindling induced synaptic plasticity in the CA1 region of rat hippocampus

The impact of pentylenetetrazol-induced kindling on the effectiveness of theta pattern primed-bursts (PBs) for the induction of long-term potentiation (LTP) of field excitatory postsynaptic potentials (fEPSP) and population spikes (PS) were investigated in hippocampal CA1 of pentylenetetrazol-kindled rats in vivo. The results showed that shortly after kindling, control animals had normal LTP of...

Scutellarin may alleviate cognitive deficits in a mouse model of hypoxia by promoting proliferation and neuronal differentiation of neural stem cells

Objective(s): Scutellarin, a flavonoid extracted from the medicinal herb Erigeron breviscapus Hand-Mazz, protects neurons from damage and inhibits glial activation. Here we examined whether scutellarin may also protect neurons from hypoxia-induced damage. Materials and Methods: Mice were exposed to hypoxia for 7 days and then administered scutellarin (50 mg/kg/d) or vehicle for 30 days Cognitiv...
